I could tell that this man was impressed by me, and maybe even intimidated. Unfortunately, my blunt manner often comes across as brusque and rude. When Nick and Daisy met, it was obvious that they were close, despite Daisy’s friendly, lively manner with everyone she met. Nick wasn’t a great big man, but he exuded a quiet air of confidence and politeness that I found magnetic. He didn’t say much, and let others do most of the talking. However, you could tell that he wasn’t simply sitting there mute. He thought through everything that others said. I was intrigued by him.
Tom, sorry, but to tell you the truth, I was not intimidated when I saw you again. I was impressed by the home that you kept, not quite by you. We go way back to those days in college together, so I know who you really are, and we were friends; but, after you took that phone call from your mistress, I lost what respect you had from me. I just could not understand how you could have an affair outside of your marriage.
